Moderator:  Dr Erinc Engin

Short description of the discussion topic:

NPL’s Hydrogen Group develops the metrological foundations needed to ensure reliable hydrogen fuel quality in line with ISO 14687 and EN 17124. The team produces accredited reference materials, advanced analytical methods and sustainable proficiency testing schemes to support laboratory accreditation and harmonised measurement across Europe. Recent work includes validation of new sampling systems, assessment of contaminant stability in cylinders and type IV tanks, and guidance for accurate hydrogen fuel analysis. These developments address critical gaps in calibrants, sampling and intercomparison, enabling trustworthy hydrogen quality measurement for emerging FCEV and heavy‑duty applications.

Briefly about the moderator:

Dr Erinc Engin

Dr Erinc Engin is a Senior Scientist in Energy Gas Metrology at the National Physical Laboratory, specialising in hydrogen quality, gas analysis and primary reference materials. He has over 20 years’ experience at NPL and TÜBİTAK UME, working across gas chromatography, PRM development and ISO‑compliant reference‑material production. He has led national and international metrology projects and contributed extensively to CCQM and EURAMET comparisons. Dr Engin holds a PhD focused on material synthesis and characterisation from Heriot‑Watt University and has published widely in gas metrology and related fields. He has a background in chemical metrology and certified reference materials production gained at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC-IRMM) in Geel (Belgium).

TC24 - Chemical Measurements

The Technical Committee 24 of IMEKO (IMEKO TC24) was founded in 2008 in order to provide an international forum of effective collaboration in all branches of Chemistry. Our goal is to improve the reliability, comparability, and traceability of chemical measurements in many sectors, addressing industrial and monitoring laboratories’ needs and on-site measurements. During the last few years, significant changes occurred in the world of chemical measurements, and we in TC24 try to rise awareness and share knowledge about them through our activities.

TC24 is composed of 5 Working Groups, covering the main fields of application addressed in the activities:

  • Chemical and biochemical sensors
  • Traceability and fundamental chemical metrology
  • Separation techniques
  • Measurements for Cultural Heritage
  • Process Analytical Technology

TC24 - Chemical Measurements - About

Collaborative efforts mainly involve the metrology community, field and sectoral laboratories (testing, analytical and industrial), proficiency testing providers, producers of reference materials. TC24 membership currently involves about 20 persons from 15 countries worldwide.
The first major activity was the organization of the scientific program of MEFNM 2008, the International Conference on Metrology of Environment, Food and Nutrition Measurements in cooperation with TC19 "Environment Measurements" and TC23 "Food and Nutritional Measurements". The conference highlighted the inter-linkages between metrology in chemistry as applied to specific groups of measurements in the environment, food, and nutrition. It was a forum to communicate to application fields (environment and food sectors) the concepts of metrology in chemistry.
