Objectives

IMEKO TC 24 "Chemical Measurements" was founded in 2008 with the objective of providing an international forum of effective collaboration in analytical chemistry, aiming to improve the reliability, comparability and traceability of chemical measurements in a large numbers of sectors, addressing industrial and monitoring laboratories needs and on site measurements.

Collaborative efforts mainly involve the metrology community, field and sectoral laboratories (testing, analytical and industrial), proficiency testing providers, producers of reference materials. TC 24 membership currently involves 16 persons, from 13 countries worldwide.

The scope of TC 24 covers all fields and areas concerned with analytical measurements, particularly focusing on Environment, Food and Health sectors, thus giving high priority on societal issues. The TC 24 will provide a platform for exchange between analytical chemists, metrologists and field relevant experts.

Field of current and future activities
- use of results of interlaboratory comparison data and proficiency testing schemes, "traceability" of the assigned value
- traceability of environmental measurements in different matrices (water, soils, sediments, etc) at regulation limits levels
- improvement of metal speciation analyses
- traceability of chemical measurements in health sector
- traceability of on-site measurements
- survey of metrological needs and requirements (reference materials, reference methods, calibration, etc.) in selected industrial fields

The first major activity is the organization of the scientific program of MEFNM 2008, the International Conference on Metrology of Environment, Food and Nutrition Measurements in cooperation with TC19 "Environment Measurements" and TC23 "Food and Nutritional Measurements". The conference will highlight the inter-linkages between metrology in chemistry as applied to specific groups of measurements in environment, food and nutrition. It intends to be a forum to communicate to application fields (environment and food sectors) the concepts of metrology in chemistry.
